Hip surgery is no joke, and neither is healing from it. For the best shot at recovering from hip surgery, you need a physio team you can trust, especially if you’re like one of our many active clients who like to stay active as you recover. That’s where Next Level Physio comes into the equation.
Our team of physios specialize in hips; that includes helping people recover from hip injuries and hip surgeries. Whether it’s a hip replacement, repairing a hip labral tear, rehabbing surgery after hip impingement, or something else, we’re here to get your hips back into happy, healthy shape.
What is Hip Surgery?
There are three main types of hip surgeries, the most common of which is a total hip replacement. Also known as a total hip arthroplasty, hip replacements involve surgeons replacing damaged sections of the hip with artificial prostheses. That said, there are many other types of hip surgeries aside from a total hip replacement. Some of these include:
- Total hip replacement (THR). This is the most common type of hip replacement surgery. Also known as a total hip arthroplasty, a total hip replacement involves a surgeon replacing the damaged hip with an artificial prosthesis.
- Partial hip replacement. A partial hip replacement, also referred to as a hemiarthroplasty, is when just one side of the femoral head (hip joint) is replaced as opposed to both sides in a total hip replacement. Partial hip replacements are common in older patients with hip fractures.
- Hip resurfacing. Also referred to as a surface replacement, hip resurfacing retains the natural femoral head. This type of hip surgery is usually done as an alternative to a total hip replacement for younger, more active patients.
Why Do People Get Hip Surgery?
People get hip surgery for a number of reasons. These include:
- Hip fractures
- Chronic pain
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Sports injuries
- Falls/injuries
What to Expect After Hip Surgery?
The recovery time following hip surgery depends on the type of procedure as well as the general age and health of the patient. Post-op, some hip replacement surgery patients can walk with assistance the same day or the day following surgery.
Don’t get too excited though. Everyone is different; while some people take a few months to recover from hip surgery, others need a full year. Most people are able to resume regular activities within 10 to 12 weeks post hip surgery, depending on the activity and the state of their health. Patience, follow-up care, physical therapy, patience, and a little more patience is key!
Also remember that it is normal to experience some level of pain following hip surgery. While the operation is intended to reduce pain in the long-term, immediate pain could be the result of the surgery itself as well as structural changes.
Physical Therapy for Post-Op Hip Surgery
Your physio team will work with you to help you regain motion and strengthen your hip muscles post-op. The length of time for physical therapy depends on what kind of surgery it was and the extent of the injury (if there was one). The overall goals of physical therapy for post-op hip surgery are to get you back to the basics of everyday life. This may be enough for many of you out there, BUT-
That’s not gonna be enough for our active clients and athletes. You know who you are!
Using our MEI Method, we work closely with you to design the right plan of care for you. The frustrations we often hear from clients who have been to the mill or corporate physical therapy practices include:
- The PT there didn’t really spend a lot of time with me.
- The PT was seeing 5 other patients at the same time.
- All they did was put on a hot pack, rub some gel on my hip, then have me do pointless exercises on my own.
- They didn’t care about my goals after surgery and did nothing to get me back to my favorite activities.
Does this sound like the type of PT place that will get you the results you want?
That’s why we’re different :)
