Shockwave therapy offers nerve deep healing that can reduce back, knee, elbow, hip and shoulder pain. This technique delivers high energy waves to painful spots with pinpoint precision to trigger repairing processes and reduce pain in tendons, muscles, and other soft tissue structures.
How it Works
How it Works
You will initially be assessed by your physiotherapist to determine if you are a viable candidate for the procedure or not. Once you are determined to be viable, you will be given an appointment or the therapy will start immediately.
During the session, the area to be treated is located using palpation to ensure the therapy is delivered accurately. Gel is applied to the area so the waves can penetrate the body efficiently and smoothly. Then the shockwave applicator is softly pushed against the gelled area and a button is pressed on the applicator to deliver shockwaves.
What Does Shockwave Therapy Treat?
At Next Level Physio we offer shockwave therapy for elbow pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, Achilles, and foot pain, and for back and hip pain using the same technique. In particular, the modality is used to treat the following conditions effectively:
- Tennis and golfer’s elbow
- Achilles tendonitis
- Heel spurs
- Plantar fasciitis
- Shin splints
- Bursitis
- Chronic muscle pain
- Iliotibial band friction syndrome
You don’t need to be anesthetized to undergo this non invasive treatment. After each session you may experience some slight soreness, swelling or tenderness in the treated area for a few days but this is completely normal. Once the treatment is done patients can return to most regular activities almost immediately.
Shockwave therapy has been known to show positive results from the first session onwards. At most, you may not be able to do high intensity activities for 48 hours following each session. Our physiotherapist will advise you on aftercare as per your needs. The recovery period is vastly shorter compared to invasive surgery.
FAQs
Here are some of the frequently asked questions that our patients usually ask and their answers:
Q: How often will I need treatment?
Most patients are recommended 5 to 10 treatments each which is 1- to 7 days apart depending on their condition, tolerance and tissue response. We will never ask you to prolong treatment just to make money.
- Is the treatment painful?
You may feel some slight discomfort when the applicator is used but your comfort will depend on the pain you are already experiencing in the treated area. Each treatment lasts only about 5 minutes at most and most patients are able to tolerate the discomfort till that time. We can also adjust the treatment intensity throughout the session.
- What should I not do post treatment?
We always ask our patients to refrain from rigorous physical activity after a shockwave therapy session for their own safety and to allow the treated area to heal properly. They can get back to their routine life and activities after 48 hours.
