Runners Category
As any runner will tell you, running is one of the best forms of exercise. Now we may be biased, especially given the fact that we have a specialized running technique training program at Next Level Physio, but the benefits of running are hard to overlook. Convenient, portable, and 100% free, running is a feel-good activity that almost anyone can participate in. The issue, however, is that runners are also subject to running injuries that could take them out for a while.
Think running injuries only apply to certain people? Think again. Even the most experienced of runners, including people who run marathons, triathlons, and ultra-marathons, experience running injuries. Common injuries in runners are usually due to performance and technique or muscle weakness, but there could be a whole slew of other things going on behind the scenes to be aware of. Running demands a lot of your body, which is why people usually feel instantly sore after getting back into it after some time off. This total body activity definitely engages the legs and feet, but it goes so much further than that. That’s why it’s critical to be aware of the most common injuries runners are prone to getting. Some of the common conditions runners may experience include:
- Meniscus tears
- IT Band syndrome
- Plantar fasciitis
- Hamstring tears
- SI Joint Dysfunction
- Achilles tendonitis
- Patellofemoral syndrome
- Hip tendinitis
- …and others
Overuse injuries are common in runners, especially if they go too hard too soon. If you’ve recently caught the running bug, we get that you may be excited to go all out. Who could blame you, especially if you feel good doing it? It can be tempting to go from 0 to 60 ASAP, and while that could be fun initially, we caution against it. Yes, everyone wants that “runner’s high” but you can still get it from shorter, more manageable runs that prioritize good technique and form without overdoing it. Running too many miles too quickly or even trying to run too fast too soon can be a recipe for disaster, especially when it comes to a running injury.
We want you to be able to run to your heart’s content for as long as possible. Running doesn’t have an age-limit. The only thing you’d be limited by is yourself. That said, this requires that you stay injury-free and learn the proper running techniques to support you on your journey.
No matter where you are as a runner (beginner, casual, experienced, all of the above), we want to help support you. Get to the streets and pound the pavement safely and you’ll be in the game for the long haul. If you help rehabbing a running injury, Next Level Physio is here to help. Reach out to us today and we’ll get you back to the track!
