Do you consider yourself an active adult? We hope so! Even if you’re not currently an active adult, perhaps you aspire to be, and that’s good enough for us. Being an active person can take on so many different definitions. Perhaps you’re someone who works out 6 days a week, rotating between running, biking, swimming… essentially cross training like the true athlete you are. Or maybe you’re someone who takes a less formal approach to fitness; daily walks, incorporating hiking into your weekly routine, or even just taking the stairs 9 times out of 10 when an elevator is an option. Whatever your level of physical activity as an active adult, we applaud you for making the effort!
Unfortunately, being an active adult also makes you susceptible to certain injuries – go figure, right? It seems like the more active you are, the healthier you will be, and that’s true…usually. As we age, common injuries for us active adults may include:
-
- Rotator cuff injuries
- Bicep tendinitis
- Shoulder labral tears
- Hip labral tears
- A torn meniscus
- IT band pain
- Herniated discs
- SI joint pain
- Lower back pain
- Elbow, wrist, & hand pain
- Knee pain
- Ankle pain
- Hip pain
- …and more
Sure, these may be common injuries for active adults, but we aren’t putting them here to scare you. We want you to be aware of them so you know how to correctly train to prevent them (we’re big fans of physiotherapy for preventing injuries for active adults) and what your options are for healing if you experience them.
So keep up your tennis, play golf multiple times a week, or even consider joining one of our fitness programs like Running Technique Training or one of our Adult Group Classes. Learning how to do all of this safely will keep you in the best shape of your life and help prevent common injuries that many active adults experience.
